Chapter Seventeen
Hillary
âItâs just that Charlie will be there, and among all the other terrible things my mom said, one of them was that heâd be there, and she insinuated that we could get back together.â
Liam simply stares at me from across the table, and frankly, I feel the same way. A little blank and a little bit like Iâve been hit with a hot frying pan.
Overnighter rings in my ears, and Iâm not super enthused by the fact that Liam hasnât immediately agreed to go to my dadâs birthday party with me.
âAnd we can go mountain biking on Saturday,â I say. âThat would leave Sunday with your momma, and you wonât even have to make an excuse.â
âWell, now that I have the shark one and the house fire, I think Iâm good for a while.â
I roll my eyes, but thatâs only the surface of the excuses Iâve used over the years to get off the phone with my mother. âWe donât all have Southern mommas who makeâmakeâmake jambalaya and insist we come over for Sunday dinner with the sibs.â
Liamâs smile slips. âYou donât have siblings.â
âSo I have a heavy load to carry,â I say. âAre you going to make me beg?â
âIâm going to make you explain what exactly the schedule will be like this weekend.â He leans forward, those dark eyes hooked so deeply into mine, I could close mine and still see him. âAnd, Iâm going to need you to define what we are.â He gestures between the two of us. âMe and you. You said the word boyfriend.â
I lean forward too, not about to give him the advantage. âYeah, because youâve been kissing me for a full day. Do you think I go around kissing all the men I know?â
âI hope not,â he says, those eyes turning even darker. âBecause then Iâll have to find those guys and punch their faces in.â
I laugh and shake my head. âYouâre not the violent type.â
âWhat type am I?â
âWeâre so far off the rails,â I say, though I normally love our back-and-forth and how derailed we get. âListen, Iâd love for my boyfriend to accompany me to my dadâs birthday party, though I know thatâs really early for us in our brand-new relationship. But I really donâtââ My throat closes at the mere thought of coming face-to-face with Charlie Vaughn again after almost four years.
âI donât want to go alone,â I say bravely.
âThen Iâll go with you,â he says. âAnd youâll stay with your parents, and Iâll find a hotel, and we can go biking on Saturday. Is that the agenda?â He says nothing of what this trip will cost him, but I know he doesnât have much extra money. Heâs told me about his excitement for every consultation he gets, and I know heâs always looking for his next job.
âIâyou wonât need to get a hotel. My parentsâ house is enormous. There are probably eight guest bedrooms there.â
âSo I was right.â
I glare at him. âItâs a road trip.â
âWith an overnighter at your parentsâ.
